The buzz in the kitchen had us all excited for the menu!
From Hoofdstad Brasserie we are served spicy smoked mackerel rillettes with cornichon on a crispy lavash – a beautiful starter. The second course was one of their signature dishes – a hand cut steak tartare with a sweet and creamy egg yolk jam, cornichons and croutons. I love this dish! As a main, we get the beautiful barbecued lamb with sweetbread, spring vegetables and an anchovy sauce that makes you want to lick your plate clean (which I did).
From La Buvette, we are first served a poached asparagus with rhubarb and Madeira. What a clean and elegant dish with the addition of the rhubarb! For our second course, we’re served cod with sake and black garlic. The black garlic sauce was a beautifully sweet and fragrant element on the fish. Almost like a Japanese touch to the dish. For dessert, Nicolas served us a fennel dessert with lemon and hazelnut. Any chef who has the balls to serve fennel, an ingredient not many people like, and dares to pair it with hazelnut, is a winner in my books. This was light and fresh and just a wonderful summer dish.
For foodies, Alex Invites is one of the highlights in Amsterdam every month. It will return in September and we’re hinted that the next chef is going to be a big surprise. We can’t wait. In the mean time, if you’ve missed the previous posts, have a look at our Hotel L’Europe page for some of our other articles on Hoofdstad Brasserie and Bord’Eau!
