Located in a monumental warehouse in the city center, Blue Boy is a new restaurant by Casper Reinders and Serge Rijn. Walking in, the restaurant’s classic yet modern interior give the place an upscale dining vibe. The art deco features are certainly a draw (how gorgeous is the bar area). But the wooden table tops and overall industrial feel make the restaurant feel informal and charmingly bistro-like as well.
Chef Jeroen de Zeeuw has been making a name for himself in Utrecht (and nationally) for years now and it was about time he joined the ranks of the Amsterdam food elite. The cuisine at Blue Boy is described as international. From a beautiful steak tartare of Black Angus with pickled Amsterdam onion, perfectly served with a quenelle of piccalilli ice cream (absolutely stunning) to a beautiful risotto of orzo, rooster egg and parmesan with a fabulous cep mushroom sauce (my favorite of the night) we are taken on a journey to the corner ends of the world. Served with the orzo came one of the loveliest surprises – a Baron de Ley white wine from Rioja – an interesting wine full of depth and flavor.
With the third course, we found ourselves in Indonesia – we’re served a flavorful rendang with a beautifully braised pork belly bun served with lime and carrots.
Even with the mix of different cuisines, there’s a wonderful build up of the dishes.
The next course featured a pike perch with cauliflower, hazelnut, herring roe and chervil, followed up by the main course of duck fillet with parsley carrot, red beets and the earthiness of shiitake mushrooms.
For our last course we are served a mango dessert with pandan, black sesame ice cream, passion fruit and crushed coconut – a dish that was utterly satisfying.
For a food lover it isn’t hard to find a good restaurant in Amsterdam these days – we’re blessed with the comings of so many good restaurants. But in the category of passionate chefs, translating their love for food onto plates in an inventive way that surprises even the biggest foodies, Blue Boy is definitely one to watch.
