With temperatures dropping to new lows, we’re finding ourselves in the cold and wet autumn season again.
Autumn is probably the least favourable season of all. It’s cold, it’s getting darker and most importantly, it marks the end of the bright and sunny summer time. But one point where autumn definitely wins is the turning of the season into bright and vivid colors. There’s something about the season that makes you want to bring out your red palettes and dark maroon lipsticks, doesn’t it?
On the skincare side, fall season is when we start prepping our skin for the cold weather. You may get away with skipping a few moisturizing steps in the summer, but come fall, it’s time to double up on skincare again. Here’s our tips on how to transition from summer to fall (and preferably all through winter!).
1. Use a beauty oil
A beauty oil has many benefits. It’s not a moisturizer but it can help battle certain problems on the skin that may arise with cold weather. Problems such as damaged skin, dry patches and break outs. A beauty oil acts like a seal to protect your skin from external and environmental damages. Use a beauty oil like La Mer renewal oil by applying it on top of your daily moisturizers. Another tip is to mix the oil with your foundation. Due to the cold fall weather, your skin may look and feel drier than normal, even with a good foundation. By mixing a beauty oil into your foundation, you create a more lively and dewy look (whilst protecting your skin).
2. Update routine with a concentrate…
To transition from warm to cold environments (or vice versa), always update your skincare regimen and analyze what your skin type needs. If you have dry to normal skin, try a powerful concentrate like the Clinique moisture surge. The product is a powerful concentrate that boosts your skin moisture levels instantly. Like a serum, a concentrate consists of a rich formula packed with skincare nutrients. It has a gel-like formula which we found very moisturizing.
…an oil-free creme…
If you have normal to oily skin, try the oil-free Estée Lauder revitalizing supreme creme. This creme is great for those who are looking for a moisturizer that doesn’t end up making your skin oilier at the end of the day. It reduces wrinkles and lines, making it the perfect anti-aging creme for twenty-somethings. You can’t start too early with anti-aging products.
…or a detoxing line
If you’re looking to completely reset your skin, try the 7-day detox with the new Biotherm skin oxygen line. The line consists of a cleanser, lotion, concentrate and cooling gel. We tried out the line and found our skin in a renewed and refreshed state. The line is perfect for those who struggle with a dull complexion, oily and damaged skin and who just haven’t found the right skincare routine yet.
The cooling gel in particular is pleasantly comforting – especially in the morning.
3. Invest in a high end product
If you’re a power woman working on a stressful schedule (at The Avantguardian HQ we’re running around constantly), you’ll find your complexion changing as a reaction to it at one point. And when you feel like your skincare routines aren’t enough for your skin anymore and you’ve tried loads of different brands and products, chances are you’re outgrowing your current routine. Especially if you’re in your thirties, you may want to start looking at using higher end products. If you’re up for the splurge, we recommend the new La Prairie skin caviar absolute filler. The brand is legendary for its products and its use of the most luxurious ingredients in the world. Skin caviar is a lavish cream that consists of caviar oils and proteins to nourish and firm the skin. The cream leaves your skin feeling silky smooth but it plumps up and lifts the skin. At one point you’re going to want to look for products that not only moisturize your skin but help relax, restore and redefine your complexion. We may not be able to wish for more time or sleep in a week but we can surely use products that help us win back time – if only just for the skin! It’s an absolute splurge – but one worth investing in for the long run (will help you through all seasons).
4. Look for natural ingredients
For those with a sensitive skin, it’s good to look into more natural based ingredients. Skincare products rarely consist of 100% natural products, but the more natural it is, the less chance you’ll have of skin irritation. The Aveda Tulasara morning cream is a product that consists of 97% naturally derived ingredients. Neutralize and brighten your skin with the anti-oxidants and floral extracts of the cream.
5. And don’t forget additional skin food like a mask…
Lastly, don’t forget your cleansers and toners in your skincare routine, or using additional skin foods like masks and serums. The Lancôme Energie de Vie exfoliating mask for instance. While an exfoliator may seem like an illogical fall skin prep product (exfoliators tend to dry out the skin), a good mask can actually improve the skin complexion. The mask clears impurities and reduces pores to a minimum while leaving behind a prepped surface for your daily moisturizers. An evenly prepped skin will absorb any product you use better and quicker.
…and eye serum!
We’re ending with probably the most underestimated skincare product: the eye serum. Eye serums are redundant to a lot of women but a lifesaver for those who know its benefits. Come fall, you’re going to want to take extra care of your eye area because this is the most sensitive area on the face. Meaning when it gets cold, this is the area that gets hit the hardest (harsh eye lines, wrinkles, dark circles – anyone?). To reduce puffiness and to keep your eyes looking and feeling bright and alive, use an eye serum like the Lancôme advanced génefique eye serum.
