I’m turning 31 next month and one of the things I am noticing already is my skin looking older. I have more red spots on my skin, my skin is less refined and smooth as it used to be and it takes longer for my skin to recover from a lack of sleep, alcohol and other events that affect the skin. I wish I could go back a decade to how my skin was then (time machine anyone?). Luckily there are some tips to maintain and improve the health of your skin. Here are my tips on how to take care of your skin – and to take it further to picture perfect skin.
1. Stay hydrated + eat healthy
Drinking water is one of the easiest things you can do to keep your skin young and smooth. Depending on your weight and how much you exercise, you should be drinking about 1,5L to 2L a day. And as far as food goes, your skin is definitely going to benefit from healthy foods that contain a lot of vitamins and properties that clear impurities. Things like olive oil, fish (for omega 3), fruits (vitamins A and C) and green tea can help improve your skin.
Beautiful skin always starts with good skincare and you can’t start young enough. I started taking care of my skin when I was 18 after my mother stressed the importance of it. And I’m glad I did. You don’t even have to have the most elaborate regimens. Focus on hydration of the skin (moisturizers, essences, serums).
If you’re not using primers yet, it is a good time to start looking into it. Primers are there to make your make up products perform at their best. Eyeshadow primers make your shadows more vibrant and face primers tend to make your skin look even smoother. Overall primers give your products a longer lasting effect. Smashbox has a variety of primers, varying from primer oils and waters. The Photo Finish foundation primer is one of my favorite products. With this primer on, you’ll see your creases and lines blurred and pores refined. It’s no wonder it is the holy grail of primers among beauty specialists.
Finding the right foundation for your skin is something that takes a lot of time and effort (and money if you’re going for higher end products). But once you have it, it makes all the difference. You can have the best skin in the world but when you’re using the wrong foundation, it can make your skin look too dark or light or feel too dry or shiny. What you want to look for is a for is a foundation that also has hydrating benefits and is long-lasting (there’s nothing worse than a foundation you have to touch up on after a couple of hours) and preferably one that makes your skin look flawless. The Smashbox Studio Skin is a foundation that was developed for the purpose of recreating a photo studio finish.
5. Finding the light
One you have all of the above covered, all you have to do is find the light when you take a photo. When taking a photo, try to have the light directed towards you. For a golden glow, do this at golden hour (an hour before the sun goes down).
