With less than two days to go and no model to shoot, I thought this was the time to start panicking. A week before the shoot I had a whole team assembled. We were going to shoot several models in several looks. But, as luck would have it, one canceled after the other and suddenly I was left with no one to shoot. Worst case, I would have to model myself I thought. But that would defeat the purpose of the shoot – I wanted to shoot. A referral came to me in the name of Nicole. Nicole saved the day. It was windy and rainy that day and a code yellow
had even been issued due to the bad weather. But she stood by the door, with a bag in one hand, holding a suitcase in the other, all smiles, energetic as ever. Frame after frame, we shot away. Luck was not what we needed after all, we needed Nicole. This is one set we shot. The minute Nicole turned her head, her face painted a light dusty white and lips a rosy pink, I thought of Memoirs of a Geisha and the hauntingly beautiful Zhang Ziyi gracing the posters for the movie. With Nicole, we were able to take this look into a more mysterious and artsy direction.
“She paints her face to hide her face. Her eyes are deep water. It is not for geisha to want. It is not for geisha to feel. Geisha is an artist of the floating world. She dances, she sings. She entertains you, whatever you want. The rest is shadows, the rest is secret.” – Memoirs of a Geisha
