Summer cannot start without a summer inspired afternoon tea at the Waldorf Astoria in Amsterdam. Amsterdam may not be the first place you think of when you think of sipping an Earl Grey tea whilst enjoying scones with clotted cream. But we sure serve a killer afternoon tea here. And proof of that is the afternoon tea at Waldorf Astoria.
The afternoon teas at Waldorf Astoria always have a theme. In previous years we’ve seen a honeybee theme and a tongue-in-cheek and playful afternoon tea from last year. This year, pastry chef Vipin Charly and executive sous chef Tomas Bron have created a new theme that is all about fun attractions and circus acts – with fun and quirky decorations that come with it!
Served with the afternoon tea is the China supreme rose tea – a soft and fragrant tea that kicks off the summer mood in a lovely way. Of course you can choose for a glass of champagne to accompany the sweets as well!
We start with an amuse of tomato, avocado, crispy rice and soy in a nori cone. This was such a delight to start off with. The afternoon tea comes in a circle tier, going from savoury to sweet. First off, the savoury gingerbread with foie gras paté. This is probably one of the most exciting combinations I’ve tried at an afternoon tea in a long time. The creaminess of the foie gras matched really well with the gingerbread. We move on to a smoked salmon sandwich with asparagus and cream cheese – light and fresh. The next two dishes are dishes you could find in an actual circus – burgers and hotdogs. But in elevated form of course! The chicken burger was tender and juicy and paired well with the Thai basil and cucumber relish. The hotdog is served with a delicious red onion compote, mustard and crispy sauerkraut – such a fun play on a classic.
Moving on to the sweeter side, we find a vanilla and strawberry macaron – with a cute clown’s smile – and a crumbly cassis and lemon sablé. The popcorn cupcake is definitely one that will satisfy your sugar craving. The exotic fruit financier was another highlight. The delicate fruitiness makes you want to eat this all summer! On the last tier we find taffy apples (with pop rocks!) and a sweet lavender and apricot choux to finish.
The scones served are vanilla and chocolate chip – which I couldn’t finish but knew I wanted to take home with me to enjoy with K!
