Christmas trees are lit, enchanting decorations are set – the festive season in Amsterdam is officially in full swing. If you haven’t started planning for the holiday celebrations yet, now’s the perfect time to start. With all the festivities happening in and around Amsterdam, you’re definitely going to end the year with a fabulous bang.
The Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam rings in the holiday season with enticing festive menus. From dinner at Librije’s Zusje to an afternoon tea at Peacock Alley and a festive brunch at Goldfinch Brasserie. We went in to have a taste of the latter – come join us, will you?
The festive brunch at the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam starts with the golden egg with caviar. Those familiar with the Waldorf Astoria signature dishes, will recognise the iconic egg. Served in a golden sprayed egg shell, the dish is not only gorgeous to look at, but it’s also a stunner of a dish. The creaminess of the soft-boiled egg, the rich crab filling and the salty caviar eggs bursting in your mouth. It’s an elegant dish that you’ll want to come back for after the holidays.
Next, we’re served the lobster Benedict with avocado and Hollandaise sauce. No brunch is complete without a Benedict and this is an ultimate luxurious one. This dish has everything you crave for during the holidays. It’s creamy, it’s ultra rich, it’s satisfying to the point you want to skip your holiday celebrations all together and fast forward to brunch the next day.
Velouté en croûte
We move on to the velouté en croûte with Jerusalem artichoke, black truffle and Comté cheese. You don’t see a lot of velouté en croûte dishes in Amsterdam. Cross the border to our Belgian neighbours and you’ll see more restaurants sport this classic French style dish. But here it may be the first time I’ve come across the dish. The soup with artichoke and vegetables is warm and savoury and will send you right into a winter mode. The flaky crust is beautifully baked and a joy to crack mind you. And the grated cheese and truffle on top is just the perfect way to elevate this classic dish.
The last dish is a beautiful quiche with smoked salmon, green asparagus, miso and mustard. I love a good quiche every once in a while. It’s one of those nostalgic dishes that you picture yourself making with your kids one day. It’s a family dish that everyone loves – young or old. And this quiche is no exception. The hints of miso and mustard add a sophisticated note to the classic dish. It’s light and creamy at the same time.
Last but not least, we’re served the desserts. First, a charming snowman ice-cream of fresh coconut – not too sweet and so creamy! Second, a lovely chocolate and hazelnut moulleux. I loved the bitter chocolate notes in this dessert!
You can find Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam at Herengracht 542-556. The Festive Brunch at Goldfinch Brasserie is served on the 25th and 26th of December from 11am. There’s several festive menus served during the holidays – be sure to check them out as well!
