The newly opened hotel Kimpton DeWitt in Amsterdam’s city center houses restaurant Wyers. An American comfort food restaurant with a Dutch influence.
We went in for a bite.
The menu features some iconic American style dishes. A pastrami Reuben, a Cuban, lobster rolls. If there’s one thing we need in Amsterdam, it’s a sandwich shop and this could just be our first!
We order a range from the menu. We start with chicken lollipops with blue cheese dressing, foie gras mousse with rhubarb chutney on toast (lovely), mac & cheese and Mexican corn on the cob. When we were in New York a couple of years ago, we discovered the Mexican elote and fell in love with it. So it was a joy for us to find this on the menu!
For our mains we really wanted to try the sandwiches. So we order the cuban with roast pork, ham, swiss cheese, mustard and pickles – a magical combination I loved! And the veal pastrami Reuben with caraway, sauerkraut, swiss and thousand island dressing).
For dessert, we’re served a delicious chocolate mousse with strawberries. I didn’t want to go all out with the desserts because what you really want to go for, are the beignets at Miss Louisa. I had never had beignets before but for years I’ve craved for them after seeing it on shows like Top Chef (season 11 in New Orleans, anyone?). Beignets are basically the equivalent to Dutch oliebollen, except they’re lighter, fluffier and way more elegant!
Wyers is where you go to for comfort food and American dishes you probably can’t find in any other Amsterdam restaurant yet!
